Patches 101: The Complete Guide

Everything you need to know to order custom patches like a pro. Six patch types, six backings, three border constructions, pricing math, and the ordering process - all in one guide.

What Is a Custom Patch?

A custom patch is a decorative or identifying emblem manufactured separately from a garment and attached afterward. Patches let you brand, identify, or decorate any surface where a sewing machine or hot press can reach. Unlike direct embroidery, patches can be moved between garments, swapped on tactical gear, or saved as keepsakes from teams and units.

Patches date back to 19th century military heraldry and exploded in the United States after World War II. Today they are how fire departments identify shifts, how breweries decorate caps, how scouts mark rank, and how tactical operators sign their gear. They have also become a major decoration category for fashion brands, streetwear, and varsity sports.

Backing Options

Backing determines how the patch attaches to the garment. The six common options:

  • Sew-on - permanent attachment, no adhesive. Standard for uniforms.
  • Iron-on - heat-activated adhesive. Cotton, fleece, blends. Not for nylon or waterproof shells.
  • Velcro (hook side) - removable. Standard for tactical, morale, military.
  • Adhesive (peel and stick) - temporary single-use. Events and trade shows.
  • Button loop - military and scout-style hanging tab.
  • Magnetic - nametags and reusable corporate badges, no fabric damage.

Read the full backing guide or see our iron-on vs sew-on vs velcro comparison.

Border Construction

The border finishes the patch edge. Three main constructions:

  • Merrowed - overlocked thread edge. Regular shapes only (circle, square, rectangle, oval, shield).
  • Hot-cut - sealed thermoplastic edge. Any irregular shape.
  • Laser-cut - precision-cut. Complex shapes, sharp inner corners, text outlines.

Common Patch Use Cases

Uniform patches - fire, police, EMS, military. Embroidered sew-on standard.
Tactical morale patches - velcro-back, PVC or embroidered.
Scout rank patches - embroidered sew-on, traditional construction.
Varsity letterman patches - chenille body with embroidered detail.
Hat patches - leather for premium, embroidered for traditional.
Brand label patches - woven or leather for fashion goods.

FAQ

What are custom patches?+

Custom patches are decorative or identifying emblems manufactured separately from a garment and attached later via sewing, heat press, or hook-and-loop. They let you brand, identify, or decorate any surface where a sewing machine or hot press can reach.

What is the minimum order for custom patches?+

At EmbroideryLI, there is no minimum. Order one or ten thousand. Per-piece pricing scales with quantity but we never refuse a small run. Most shops require 25-100 piece minimums.

How much do custom patches cost?+

Embroidered patch pricing starts at $12 for 2-inch, $16 for 3.5-inch, and $22 for 5-inch. Other patch types (PVC, leather, chenille, sublimated) vary based on tooling and materials. See our pricing guide for details.

How long does it take to make custom patches?+

Embroidered and woven patches typically ship in 7-10 business days after artwork approval. PVC patches require mold tooling and run 15-20 business days. Rush production is available on most types.

What patch type should I choose?+

It depends on your application. Embroidered is the safe default. Woven for fine detail. PVC for waterproofing. Leather for premium hat patches. Chenille for varsity letterman. Sublimated for full-color photographic art.

Do I need to digitize my artwork?+

For embroidered and woven patches, yes - your art needs to be converted to a stitch file. Digitizing is free on orders $150 or more. For PVC, leather, sublimated, and chenille patches, no separate digitizing is needed.

Can patches go on hats?+

Yes. Leather patches dominate the premium hat market, but embroidered, woven, and PVC patches all apply to caps cleanly via sewing or heat. We make hat patches every week.

Where can I order custom patches?+

You can design and order directly through the configurator on this site, send artwork to our quote form, or call (631) 458-3842 to speak with a specialist. We ship nationwide and offer local pickup in Huntington, NY.
