Embroidery for Police Departments

Agency shoulder patches, plainclothes polos, embroidered name strips, K9 and SWAT/ESU unit patches, and gear bag identification.

Embroidery for Law Enforcement

Police agency identification is regulated, traditional, and personal. The shoulder patch is the most recognized agency identifier in the world. The name strip is the most personal piece of equipment a sworn officer wears. We treat both with the seriousness they deserve - patch shape, agency seal, scroll banner, color tradition, and font are all reviewed against an agency-approved sample before a single piece is run.

Plainclothes and admin units have their own requirements. Detective polos, narcotics, juvenile, and admin bureau staff often need embroidered badge and name in formats different from the uniformed patrol. We follow each agency's published uniform regulations on placement, font, and color, and we will not produce gear that violates them.

For specialty units - K9, SWAT, ESU, marine, motorcycle, harbor, narcotics, school resource - we produce both full-color and subdued patches from the same digitized file. Subdued OD green, coyote tan, and black-on-black versions are standard for tactical wear, and we keep both versions on permanent record once an agency approves the design.

What We Embroider for Law Enforcement

  • Agency shoulder patches (full-color and subdued)
  • Embroidered name strips and rank patches
  • Plainclothes detective and admin polos
  • K9 unit patches and handler gear
  • SWAT, ESU, ERT specialty patches in tactical colors
  • Motorcycle unit and marine unit identifiers
  • Gear bags, rifle bags, and entry kit ID panels
  • ANSI hi-viz vests with agency identification

Placements & Regulations

Standard agency shoulder patch placement is the left sleeve, with department-specific variation on placement of unit rockers and tenure stripes. For polos, embroidered badge on the left chest and name strip on the right chest is the most common detective and admin layout. We follow the published reg, not our preference.

For tactical gear, subdued patches mount via hook-and-loop for field-removable identification. We produce the patch with hook backing standard or sewn-on as the agency requires.

Agency-Restricted Production & ANSI Hi-Viz

We do not sell agency-restricted patches to the public. For agency shoulder patches, K9 patches, SWAT and ESU patches, and any restricted unit identifier, we require an order placed by a verified department contact, on agency letterhead or via a department-issued PO.

For ANSI 107 hi-viz traffic vests, we embroider without crossing the background area minimums required to maintain the rating. For vests that must remain certified, we recommend removable patch panels or limit embroidery to non-fluorescent regions of the vest.

“Our K9 unit needed updated handler patches in subdued for night operations, plus matching standard color patches for community events. EmbroideryLI produced both versions from one digitized file, kept both on permanent record, and turned the order in a week. They understand the difference between gear that goes on a tac vest and gear that goes on a parade uniform.”

Police Embroidery FAQ

Do you produce K9, SWAT, ESU, and specialty unit patches?

Yes. Unit-specific patches - K9, SWAT, ESU, marine, motorcycle, narcotics, detective division - are a significant share of our police work. We produce them in standard colors and in subdued variants for low-visibility wear.

Can you embroider plainclothes polos for detective and admin units?

Yes. Plainclothes polos with embroidered badge, name, and unit identifier are common detective and admin gear. We follow agency rules on placement and color, and we will not produce gear that conflicts with a published uniform regulation.

Do you make subdued or low-vis versions of standard agency patches?

Yes. Subdued versions in OD green, black on black, or coyote tan are produced from the same digitized file as the standard color version. We keep both on file once approved.

How do you handle agency verification for restricted patches?

For agency-restricted patches we require an order from a verified department contact on department letterhead or via a department-issued PO. We do not sell agency patches to the public.

Do you embroider hi-viz traffic vests with agency markings?

Yes. We embroider ANSI-rated traffic and crossing vests without crossing the background area minimums required by the standard. We can also produce removable embroidered panels for vests that need to maintain their certification.
