Custom Leather Patches
Real or vegan leather. Laser-etched, debossed, or printed. The premium hat patch standard.
Real vs Vegan Leather
We stock both. Real leather is full-grain or top-grain cowhide, available in natural tan, brown, black, distressed brown, and several stained finishes. Vegan leather is a polyurethane surface on a fabric backing - colorfast, lighter, animal-free, and slightly more uniform in appearance.
Real leather pros: develops character and patina with age, premium tactile feel, traditional heritage look.
Vegan leather pros: lower cost, more consistent appearance batch to batch, lighter weight, vegan-aligned brands.
For bourbon-brand and heritage-aesthetic projects we typically recommend real leather. For high-volume cap programs where consistency and cost matter, vegan leather is often the better fit.
Decoration Methods
Three ways to put your art on leather. Each produces a different look.
- Laser etching: A laser burns the design into the leather surface. The art reads as a darker, slightly recessed mark with high precision and fine detail. Best for monograms, wordmarks, and intricate logos. Most popular method.
- Debossing: A heated steel die presses the design into the leather. Lines are crisp, the impression is deeper than etching, and the tactile feel is more premium. Best for bold logos and traditional heritage marks. Requires a one-time die fee.
- UV print on leather: Full-color art is UV-cured onto the surface. Best for multi-color art, photographic logos, or work that etching cannot reproduce.
Hat Patches - The Most Common Use
Leather hat patches now own the premium cap category. They define the look of trucker hats, rope hats, and structured caps for breweries, outdoor brands, ranch wear, bourbon distilleries, golf clubs, real estate, and any brand chasing a crafted, heritage aesthetic.
We supply leather patches uncombined or apply them to caps in-house. If you bring the hats we patch them. If you need both hats and patches we source the cap and finish the project end-to-end. Common cap sizing for leather patches is 2.5" x 2" rectangular, 2.75" x 1.5" rectangular, 2" x 3" banner, or 2.5" circle.
Pair leather hat patches with embroidered side patches or woven labels for a multi-mark cap program.

Leather Patch FAQ
What is a leather patch made of?+
A leather patch is cut from real cowhide, faux/vegan leather (polyurethane on a fabric base), or genuine suede. We stock both real and vegan leather, with real leather coming in a range of grain finishes and colors.
What is the difference between laser-etched and debossed?+
Laser-etched burns the design into the surface using a laser - the burn marks the leather darker and slightly recessed, with high precision and fine detail. Debossed presses the design into the leather with a heated steel die - the impression is deeper, the lines are crisper, and the look is more traditional. Etched is more flexible for art changes; debossed has a more premium tactile feel.
Can you print full color on leather?+
Yes. UV-cured printing applies full-color art directly to the leather surface. Print-on-leather is the right choice for full-color logos or photographic art that etching cannot reproduce.
Why are leather patches so popular on hats?+
Leather patches dominate the premium hat market because the rich material and matte finish read as crafted and intentional - matching the rise of bourbon, outdoor, and heritage-brand aesthetics. They pair well with rope hats, trucker hats, and structured caps, and the leather ages with character.
How are leather patches attached to hats?+
On caps we typically heat-fuse the patch with a high-bond adhesive backing and reinforce with perimeter stitching. For jackets and other garments we sew them on. Leather patches do not work well with iron-on consumer adhesive - the heat needed to bond would risk damaging the leather.
How durable are leather patches?+
Leather is durable but ages. Real leather develops patina with wear, sun, and water - many customers consider that a feature. Vegan leather is more colorfast but can crack under heavy stretching. Both survive years of normal use on caps and outerwear.
