Jacket Embroidery - Front, Back, Sleeve Custom Stitching

Softshells, fleeces, work jackets, varsity, bomber, coach. Carhartt, Port Authority, North End, Sport-Tek. Heavy-fabric specialists with lined-jacket experience. Real machine embroidery in Huntington, NY.

Jacket Types We Embroider

Softshell

Port Authority J317, Sport-Tek ST970 and similar. Smooth woven shell over fleece backing. Excellent embroidery surface - holds tight stitch density without puckering.

Fleece

Port Authority F217, Columbia Steens Mountain. Soft pile fabric requires cut-away backing to stabilize stitching against pile drag.

Work Jacket

Carhartt J140, J130, J133. Heavyweight duck canvas. Built for jobsite conditions - embroidery here will outlive the wearer. May require sharper needles on heavyweight canvas.

Varsity

Wool body with leather sleeves. Classic school and team look. Block lettering on chest and back, optional sleeve numbers.

Bomber

Port Authority J750, Independent Trading EXP94BMR. Nylon shell, ribbed cuffs. Common in startup and merch programs.

Coach's Jacket

Port Authority JP54, Independent EXP54LWZ. Nylon shell, snap-front. Lightweight, embroiders cleanly, stays in stock everywhere.

Insulated / Puffer

Port Authority J709, Carhartt CT102208. Down or synthetic fill. Requires careful hooping to avoid compressing fill - usually we use a hooped frame technique to bypass the loft.

Rain Shell

Sport-Tek JST90, Port Authority J331. Waterproof outer requires moderate stitch density - over-stitching can perforate the membrane.

Jacket Placement Options

Left Chest

$10

Standard primary logo placement on any jacket. Max 3.5 inches wide. Works on softshell, fleece, work, bomber, coach, and most insulated jackets without special handling.

Full Back

$45

The marquee placement on a jacket. Max 12 inches wide. Best for large team logos, company branding, trade-crew identification. Common on work jackets, varsity, and coach jackets.

Sleeve (each)

$10

Left or right sleeve, max 3 inches wide. Common for secondary marks, sponsor logos, division tags, or year. Both sleeves available.

Heavyweight Backing Requirements

Jacket fabrics are heavier and structurally different than shirt fabrics, so the backing equation changes. The wrong backing on a fleece jacket looks acceptable when the jacket is new and looks awful after three washes. Our defaults by fabric:

  • Softshell / nylon shell: medium-weight tear-away
  • Fleece: cut-away (always)
  • Canvas work jacket: tear-away, heavy needle
  • Wool varsity: cut-away
  • Insulated / down: tear-away with a floating hoop technique to bypass fill

Lined Jacket Considerations

Lined jackets cannot be embroidered through both layers - the backing needs to sit against the inside of the outer shell only, or the entire decoration distorts as the two layers move independently. For lined jackets we open a small slit in the lining behind the embroidery placement, hoop the outer shell on its own, stitch the design, then close the lining with matching thread.

This adds about 1-2 days to standard turnaround and a small handling fee per piece. It is the only way to get a professional finish on a lined jacket. Skip this step (some shops do) and you end up with a puckered, distorted logo that gets worse with every wash.

Jacket Embroidery FAQ

Can you embroider on lined jackets?+

Yes. Lined jackets require an extra step: we open a small slit in the liner near the embroidery placement, hoop the outer shell only, stitch the design, then close the liner with matching thread so the inside finish stays clean. Adds 1-2 days to turnaround and a small handling fee per piece.

What backing do you use on fleece jackets?+

Cut-away backing - always. Fleece is a knit with significant stretch and pile, and tear-away cannot stabilize it long-term. Cut-away stays in the garment for the life of the embroidery and prevents distortion through wash cycles.

Can you embroider on a Carhartt jacket I already own?+

Yes. We embroider customer-supplied jackets across every category including Carhartt, Dickies, Helly Hansen, and other work brands. We do not warranty the jacket itself, but in years of running this work we have not damaged a commercial-grade jacket. New garments only - no used or pre-decorated.

What is the largest design I can put on a jacket back?+

Standard maximum is 12 inches wide by 12 inches tall - the limit of our standard hoops. Larger continuous back designs are possible on a jumbo hoop, with re-hooping and registration handled by our digitizers. Most jacket-back designs come in at 10-12 inches wide.

Do you embroider varsity letters and chenille patches?+

We embroider varsity-style block letters and standard chenille is available as a patch option (sewn onto the jacket back or chest). For mixed chenille / embroidery varsity programs we can quote the full build.

How long does a jacket order take?+

Standard turnaround is 7-10 business days. Lined jackets that require liner work add 1-2 days. Rush turnaround available. Reorders of stored designs ship faster - often within a week.

Other categories: Polos, Hats, Hoodies, Uniforms, Patches.
