Custom Woven Patches

Fine thread woven into a smooth, flat patch. Higher detail than embroidered, premium finish, fashion-brand standard.

How Woven Patches Are Made

A woven patch is made on a loom. Thin polyester warp and weft threads are interlaced to form the patch fabric and the design simultaneously - the art is part of the weave, not stitched on top of a separate base. The result is a thin, flat, smooth patch with the texture of a high-quality necktie or fine ribbon.

Because the design is woven into the structure rather than embroidered onto twill, woven patches can render much finer detail. Lines that would blur or get swallowed in embroidery sit clean and crisp on woven. Small text, hairline serifs, and intricate symbols render at their intended weight.

Once the patch comes off the loom it is finished with a hot-cut edge (heat-sealed flush perimeter) or laser-cut to a custom shape. Backings (sew-on, iron-on, velcro, adhesive) are applied the same way as on embroidered patches.

When to Choose Woven

Pick woven over embroidered when:

  • Your art has small text, fine lines, or photographic-style detail that thread embroidery cannot resolve.
  • You want a low-profile patch that lays flat on lightweight garments without the bulk of raised thread.
  • The brand aesthetic calls for a premium, refined finish - common in streetwear, technical outdoor apparel, and fashion labels.
  • You are producing hangtags, neck labels, or interior brand marks where a thin patch behaves better than embroidery.

Pick embroidered instead when the patch lives on a uniform, takes abuse, needs maximum durability, or features a bold logo with chunky lines.

Color and Detail Benefits

Woven patches handle 7-9 colors at base pricing without the bulk issues that complicate embroidered patches. Because the thread is thinner and tightly interlaced, you can introduce gradient effects (via tight thread-color transitions), small color blocks, and detailed shading that read as nearly photographic at finished size.

The minimum legible text height on a woven patch is about 0.1 inches - roughly half the floor of embroidered. That opens up tiny brand wordmarks, fine print, URLs, copyright marks, and detailed symbols.

Woven Patch FAQ

What is a woven patch?+

A woven patch is built on a loom: thin polyester threads are interlaced to form the patch itself, with the design woven directly into the fabric. Unlike embroidery, the thread is part of the patch structure, not stitched on top.

How does a woven patch differ from an embroidered patch?+

Embroidered patches have raised, dimensional stitching on top of a twill base. Woven patches are flat, smooth, and thinner because the thread is the patch itself. Woven holds finer detail; embroidered holds more durability and texture.

Why do fashion brands prefer woven patches?+

Woven patches handle small text, fine lines, and brand mark detail better than embroidery. They lay flat on garments without the bulky raised texture of thread. The finished look reads as premium and intentional, which is why streetwear and outdoor brands use them on hangtags and chest hits.

How many colors can I use in a woven patch?+

Most woven patches handle 7-9 colors at no surcharge. Because woven uses thinner thread, additional colors integrate without the bulk problems embroidered patches face.

What is the minimum text size for a woven patch?+

Woven can hold legible text down to about 0.1 inches in height - roughly half what embroidery can manage. Hairline detail and small serifs render cleanly.

Can woven patches have a merrowed border?+

Typically no. Woven patches are finished with a hot-cut or laser-cut edge because the thin thread does not pair well with the bulk of a merrow stitch. The finished edge is clean and flush with the patch surface.
