Patch Comparison
Embroidered vs Woven Patches
Embroidered patches are the traditional standard - tactile, dimensional, durable. Woven patches are thinner, smoother, and hold finer detail. Same materials, different construction, different best-fit jobs.
How Each Is Made
An embroidered patch is constructed by sewing thicker thread (around 0.5mm in diameter) on top of a twill fabric base. The base shows through the unfilled areas if you leave them blank, or you can use 100% coverage to hide the twill entirely. The result is a tactile, dimensional, raised patch with the unmistakable look and feel of real embroidery.
A woven patch is constructed by weaving thinner threads (around 0.3mm in diameter) together to form the patch itself. There is no separate base fabric - the design is the patch. The finer thread and integrated weaving process let woven patches hold crisper detail, smaller text, and tighter line work than embroidered. The tradeoff is a flatter, less tactile surface.
Both methods can use merrowed, hot-cut, or laser-cut borders. Both can ship with sew-on, iron-on, velcro, adhesive, or magnetic backing. The core decision is construction - which one fits your art and your use case.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Dimension | Embroidered | Woven |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Thicker thread stitched on top of a twill base. | Thinner thread woven into the patch itself - no twill backing visible. |
| Detail Level | Moderate. Fine line work and small text lose legibility. | High. Holds thin lines and small text down to ~3mm. |
| Feel | Tactile, raised, dimensional. | Smooth, flat, thinner. |
| Color Limits | Up to ~9 thread colors per design comfortably. | Up to ~7 thread colors woven simultaneously. |
| Look | Classic, premium, traditional. | Refined, modern, smoother finish. |
| Cost | Standard - $12-$22 by size at EmbroideryLI. | Similar to embroidered, sometimes slightly less for complex art. |
| Durability | Excellent - thicker thread, more robust. | Excellent but slightly thinner profile. |
| Best For | Uniforms, military, corporate, sports, scouts. | Fashion brands, fine detail art, modern streetwear. |

When Embroidered Wins
- Uniform and agency patches (military, police, fire, EMS).
- Sports and team patches expected to take heavy abuse.
- Scouts, varsity, corporate patches where tradition reads as authority.
- Designs with bold simple shapes that benefit from raised texture.
When Woven Wins
- Fashion and streetwear brand labels.
- Logos with fine line work and small text.
- Garments where a low-profile patch integrates better than a raised one.
- Hat patches where you want a refined modern look.
FAQ
What is the difference between an embroidered patch and a woven patch?+
An embroidered patch is made by sewing thread on top of a fabric base (usually twill). A woven patch is made by weaving thinner threads together to form the patch itself - the design is the fabric. Embroidered is tactile and raised; woven is smoother, flatter, and holds finer detail.
Are woven patches more expensive than embroidered?+
Pricing is similar. For very complex multi-color designs with fine detail, woven can be more cost-effective because you are not paying for high stitch counts. For larger simple designs, embroidered is often slightly cheaper.
Which patch type holds smaller text better?+
Woven. Embroidered thread is roughly 0.4-0.5mm thick, so text under 4-5mm becomes a blur. Woven thread is finer and can hold text down to about 3mm with crisp legibility.
Do woven patches feel cheap?+
No. Woven patches are a premium fashion-grade construction used by brands like Patagonia, North Face, and Carhartt for label patches. They are not cheap - just thinner and smoother than embroidered.
Can woven patches have a merrowed border?+
Yes. Both embroidered and woven patches can use merrowed (overlocked thread) borders for regular shapes, or hot-cut and laser-cut borders for irregular shapes.
Which patch type is more durable in the wash?+
Both are highly durable. Embroidered has a slight edge for very heavy abuse because the thread is thicker. Woven patches will hold up for hundreds of wash cycles and are standard on outdoor apparel.
Which is better for a logo with photographic detail?+
Neither is ideal for true photographic art. Sublimated patches are the right call for photo-realistic patches because they can reproduce gradients and full-color images on a polyester base.
Can I combine embroidery and weaving in one patch?+
Standard hybrid is uncommon but possible - some shops add embroidered hits on top of a woven base for extra dimension on a logo mark. Ask us if you want to discuss this approach.
