How Each Is Made
Leather patches start as full sheets of real leather (cow, vegetable tanned, or full-grain) or vegan leather (PU-based). The patch is die-cut or laser-cut to shape, then the design is applied via laser etching (the laser burns the leather surface, creating a contrast) or debossing (a heated metal die presses the design into the leather). Backing is typically sew-on because of leather thickness.
PVC patches are molded from soft PVC rubber compound. A custom aluminum mold is cut from your artwork, the PVC is injected in multiple colors, cured under heat, and popped out as a finished waterproof patch. PVC can be 2D (single-layer flat) or 3D (multi-layer sculpted depth). Backings are bonded after molding.

FAQ
Are leather patches waterproof?+
No. Real leather absorbs water, dries stiff, and can warp or crack with repeated wetting. Vegan leather is more water-resistant but still not truly waterproof. For applications that will get wet, PVC patches are the right choice.

Yes, particularly on premium heritage-style gear. Sew-on leather patches on canvas duffels, weekenders, and waxed canvas packs are a classic look. Just avoid heavy moisture exposure.
Do PVC patches look cheap?+
No, when made well. Modern PVC patches are used by every branch of the US military, premium outdoor brands, and tactical companies. The "cheap" reputation comes from low-end import patches with poor mold detail. A properly made PVC patch is a premium product.
