Twill (patch backing)
Pronounced: twillThe woven polyester base fabric that patches are stitched onto, providing a smooth dense surface for embroidery.
Twill, in the context of patches, refers to the polyester twill fabric used as the base substrate for embroidered patches. Polyester twill is a tightly woven cloth with a diagonal weave pattern that gives it a smooth, dense, slightly textured surface. It is the standard patch base because it holds embroidery cleanly, does not fray easily, and comes in a wide range of solid colors.
Patch twill is typically 100% polyester for durability and colorfastness. It is sold by patch makers in standard colors (black, white, navy, red, royal, gold, gray, and others), and the color is chosen to match the background of the patch design. A patch with a white background uses white twill. A patch with a red background uses red twill. The twill color shows through any unstitched areas of the design.
The twill is hooped together with stabilizer and embroidered with the design. After embroidery, the excess twill around the patch is cut away (by hot-cut, laser, or merrowing), leaving the patch as a finished piece. Patch twill is much heavier and stiffer than apparel fabric, giving the finished patch its characteristic firm body.
Some custom patches use specialty base fabrics: felt for low-cost patches, denim for casual patches, leather for premium patches, and reflective material for safety applications. But standard polyester twill remains the default and accounts for the vast majority of custom patch production.
