Sew-On Backing
The standard patch finish with no adhesive or fastener, requiring the patch to be sewn onto the garment by hand or machine.
Sew-on backing is the original patch finish: a clean fabric back with no adhesive, no fastener, and no heat-seal layer. The patch must be sewn onto the garment with a needle and thread, by hand or by sewing machine. It is the most permanent and durable backing option.
Sew-on patches are the standard for items that require maximum durability and longevity: scout uniforms, military dress uniforms, varsity jackets, motorcycle club rockers, biker patches, and any application where the patch will be on the garment for the life of the garment. A properly sewn patch will outlast most iron-on and velcro applications.
The trade-off is application difficulty. Sew-on requires either a willing volunteer with basic sewing skills, a tailor, a parent with a sewing machine, or the embroidery shop itself to sew patches onto garments. Many shops offer sew-on service as an add-on, charging a small per-patch labor fee to attach customer patches to customer garments.
For patches that will see heavy laundering, dry-cleaning, or rough wear, sew-on is the only truly permanent option. For one-time-use, kid-driven, or convenience applications, iron-on or velcro is usually preferred. Sew-on backing is generally the default (and lowest-cost) option in patch pricing, with other backings as upgrades.
