Poly-Mesh Backing
A lightweight, soft, transparent cut-away stabilizer used on thin or light-colored garments where conventional backing would show through.
Poly-mesh is a specialty cut-away backing with an open mesh weave and minimal visual presence. It is used on lightweight performance fabrics, white and pastel knits, and other garments where a standard cut-away would show through the front of the fabric as a visible shadow square.
The most common poly-mesh comes in 1.5 to 2.0 ounce weights. It feels almost like a thin sheet of stocking material. When trimmed close to the embroidery and washed, the residual mesh blends invisibly into the back of the garment, even on light fabrics.
Poly-mesh is the default backing for high-end performance polos like Nike Dri-FIT, Under Armour Tech, and Adidas Climalite, where customers expect a premium feel and no visible backing through the front. It is also used on white tees and other light knits where standard cut-away would be visible as a slightly off-color rectangle behind the embroidery.
The trade-off is that poly-mesh provides slightly less stability than a heavier cut-away. For dense designs (over about 8,000 stitches) or large jacket-back embroidery, a heavier cut-away may still be required, with the operator accepting some show-through. For most chest-logo applications on performance and light fabrics, poly-mesh is the right call.
