Water-Soluble Stabilizer

A stabilizer that dissolves completely in water, used as a topping on plush fabrics or as a backing on freestanding lace and sheer fabrics.

Water-soluble stabilizer is a clear film or fabric-like material that dissolves entirely when soaked in water. It comes in two main forms: thin film toppings (used on top of plush fabrics) and heavier fabric-like backings (used for freestanding lace, sheer garments, and applications where no stabilizer can remain after embroidery).

As a topping, water-soluble film is placed on top of plush fabrics (fleece, terry, pile knits, towels) before hooping. It keeps fine stitches from sinking into the loops and gives crisp definition to lettering and small detail. After embroidery, the film is torn away from the edges and any residue rinses off with water spritz or laundering.

As a backing, heavier water-soluble fabric is used for projects where the stabilizer cannot remain in the finished piece. Embroidered lace, freestanding badges, and very sheer fabrics like organza all use water-soluble backing. After embroidery, the piece is soaked in water and the backing washes away completely, leaving just the stitched design.

Water-soluble is sensitive to humidity. Stock should be kept sealed in plastic until use, because high humidity in summer can soften and degrade the film. Operators in coastal climates often store water-soluble in airtight bins. Brands include Sulky Solvy, Madeira Avalon, and OESD Aquafilm.
