JEF File

Pronounced: jeff

The native stitch file format for Janome embroidery machines.

JEF is the Janome stitch file format, the equivalent of DST for Tajima or PES for Brother. Janome is a Japanese sewing and embroidery machine manufacturer with a strong presence in the home and prosumer market. Their Memory Craft series and current Continental and Skyline embroidery models all read JEF natively.

Like PES, JEF embeds color information referencing the Janome thread color palette and stores a thumbnail of the design. JEF Plus (.jef+) is the extended version supporting larger hoops and additional commands on newer Janome machines. When digitizing for a Janome customer, always confirm which model and which file variant is required.

Commercial shops rarely use JEF for production. The format is almost exclusively used by home embroiderers, custom hobbyists, and small one-off studios running Janome equipment. If a customer requests JEF, they are nearly always operating their own home machine and want a file optimized for it.

Most digitizing software exports JEF cleanly from a master EMB or DST, including correct color mapping if the digitizer takes a moment to assign Janome thread codes. As with PES, requesting JEF up front is preferable to converting after delivery.
