EXP File
Pronounced: E-X-PThe stitch file format used by Melco and Bernina embroidery machines.
EXP is the proprietary stitch format developed for Melco embroidery machines, which were historically among the most popular commercial single-head machines in the United States. Bernina, a separate embroidery brand, also uses EXP as one of its supported native formats. The file is similar in structure to DST but uses a different command encoding.
EXP files come in two flavors. Melco EXP includes a separate condition file (.con) that defines color and trim information. Bernina EXP is self-contained. The distinction matters when transferring files between brands, because a Bernina machine reading a Melco EXP without the condition file will often skip trims or default colors incorrectly.
Most contract digitizing services include EXP as a delivery option alongside DST and PES. Bernina sewing-and-embroidery combo machines popular with home embroiderers and small studios will accept EXP natively, making it a useful format for customers running that equipment.
For most commercial production, DST remains the safer default. EXP is requested when a customer specifically owns a Melco EMT, Melco Bravo, or Bernina machine and wants the file in its native dialect for maximum compatibility.
