Fauxbroidery

Pronounced: FOH-broy-dur-ee

A printed graphic designed to look like embroidery, applied by direct-to-film or screen printing rather than stitched with thread.

Fauxbroidery is the deliberate visual imitation of embroidery using print decoration. The design is created with high-contrast outlines, simulated stitch textures, and shadows that suggest raised thread, then applied to the garment by DTF (direct-to-film) transfer, screen printing, or similar print methods.

Fauxbroidery exists because real embroidery has limits: cost per piece, minimum stitch detail, color count, and turn-around time. A print decoration can reproduce a photographic logo with fine detail and unlimited colors at a fraction of the per-piece cost of embroidery. The trade-off is that fauxbroidery does not have the tactile depth or premium feel of real stitching.

In the trade, fauxbroidery is sometimes positioned as a budget option for clients who like the look of embroidery but cannot accommodate the cost or detail constraints. Some apparel brands also use it for designs that contain elements (gradients, photographs, very fine text) that would not stitch well.

Embroidery purists view fauxbroidery as a different category of decoration that should not be marketed as embroidery. Most professional shops are transparent with clients about which technique is being used. Real embroidery and fauxbroidery sometimes appear on the same garment, with embroidery for the main logo and printed elements for supporting graphics.
