Monogram
An embroidered design composed of one or more letters (usually initials), arranged in a decorative configuration for personalization.
A monogram is a personalization embroidery showing one or more letters arranged decoratively to represent an individual, family, or brand. The most common forms are single-letter (one initial), two-letter (first and last name initials), and three-letter (first, last middle), often arranged with the middle or last initial larger and centered.
Monograms are typically rendered in classic embroidery fonts: script, block, diamond, or decorative serifs. Sizing varies from small 1-inch monograms on shirt cuffs and napkins up to 4-inch monograms on bath towels and robes. The lettering is almost always satin-stitched for clean lines, sometimes with a run-stitch outline for additional detail.
Monogramming is a major segment of the embroidery business, particularly for gift items, towels and linens, robes, bags, and wedding-party accessories. Shops that specialize in monograms typically keep a library of pre-built letter sets (called monogram fonts or monogram alphabets) that can be assembled into customer-specific names without full custom digitizing each time.
Placement matters in monogramming. Standard placements include shirt cuff (typically 2.5 inches above the cuff edge, 1 inch from the side seam), towel corner (centered 2 inches above the hem), and bag center. Customers ordering monograms should specify both the letters and the desired font, as well as confirming the order of initials (a common confusion is whether the larger center initial is the last name or middle name).
