Cap Frame

A specialized curved hooping system designed to hold hats and caps on an embroidery machine for stitching on the curved front panel.

A cap frame (also called a hat hoop or cap driver) is the curved clamping system that holds a hat in place on the embroidery machine. Unlike flat hoops, the cap frame is shaped to match the curve of a structured cap crown, with a driver mechanism that rotates the frame as the machine stitches across the curved surface.

The cap frame consists of a curved metal or plastic clamp that grips the hat by its sweatband, plus a driver that mounts to the embroidery machine bed and rotates the clamp side-to-side during stitching. As the machine moves the needle laterally across the cap front, the driver rotates the hat so the embroidery follows the curve, not a flat plane.

The most common cap frames are 270-degree wide-angle drivers (sometimes called wide-angle cap frames) that allow stitching from one side seam all the way around to the other on a structured cap. Older 180-degree drivers stitch only the front panel. The wide-angle is now standard in most commercial shops because it gives access to side embroidery placements as well as front.

Cap framing is a separate skill from flat hooping. The operator has to seat the hat correctly on the frame, tighten the clamp evenly, and align the front panel center with the embroidery start point. Improperly framed caps shift during stitching, producing skewed or misregistered designs. Shops that do high-volume cap work train their operators specifically on framing technique.
