Embroidery for Marinas, Yacht Clubs & Boating

Crew polos, yacht club hats, embroidered burgees, towels, and totes for Long Island marinas, yacht clubs, charter operators, and boat dealers.

Long Island Has More Coast Than Most States

From the Great South Bay to Long Island Sound to the East End, Long Island runs hundreds of marinas, yacht clubs, charter operators, and boat dealers. The marina industry here operates a real summer season - April fit-out to October haul-out - and the visual identity of a marina or club is part of how it competes for slips, members, and charter customers. Embroidered apparel and accessories are part of that visual identity.

Marine wear is also a punishing environment for embroidery. Sun exposure breaks down thread color, salt air corrodes everything it touches, and saltwater spray cycles every hour the crew is on deck. We use polyester thread (Madeira Polyneon or Isacord) on every marina order because polyester resists UV fade and salt-air degradation in ways that rayon thread does not.

For yacht clubs specifically, embroidered burgees, member polos, and pro-shop towels are traditional pieces. The burgee design is the club's signature and we treat it with the same color-accuracy care we treat any agency patch.

What We Embroider for Marinas & Yacht Clubs

  • Crew and dockhand polos in performance poly
  • Front-panel embroidered yacht club hats and trucker caps
  • Member polos and ladies' cuts in club colors
  • Embroidered burgee patches for blazers and jackets
  • Embroidered terry towels for member gift shops
  • Canvas totes and weekender bags
  • Captain and charter operator polos with name and license endorsement
  • Pet life jacket embroidery for traveling crew dogs

Placements & Marina Style

For crew polos, left chest marina or club mark is standard, often with the crew member name or position (DOCKHAND, MATE, CAPTAIN) on the right chest. For hats, front-panel embroidery in the burgee or marina mark is standard.

For member polos at yacht clubs, left chest burgee is standard. For pro-shop towels, the embroidery sits on the hem strip or in one corner. For canvas totes, full-front center is the right placement to maximize burgee visibility.

UV Fade & Salt Air Considerations

Polyester thread is the standard for marine wear because UV breakdown and salt-air humidity will degrade rayon thread faster than the garment itself. Madeira Polyneon and Isacord both produce polyester threads with excellent fade resistance and we use them as default on all marina orders.

For specialty colors that require rayon to hit a Pantone exactly, we will tell you up front that the color will fade faster in marine conditions and offer alternatives. Color longevity is more important on a marina polo than absolute color match.

“Our marina runs about 25 dockhands and managers from April through October. Last year we switched our crew polos to EmbroideryLI's polyester thread spec and the difference at the end of the season was night and day - the polos that were embroidered with their thread looked the same in October as they did in May. Previous years our crew shirts faded out by August.”

Marina & Boating FAQ

Do you use UV-fade-resistant thread for marine wear?

Yes. For polos, hats, and apparel that will be worn on deck all season, we use Madeira Polyneon or Isacord polyester thread - both of which have excellent UV-fade resistance compared to rayon. Sun-soaked decks do not fade the colors out.

Can you embroider on quick-dry and performance fabrics?

Yes. Performance polos (Nike Dri-FIT, Cutter & Buck DryTec, Sport-Tek PosiCharge) are standard for marina crew. We adjust stitch density so the logo does not pucker on the lightweight fabric.

Do you embroider on towels and tote bags for yacht club gift shops?

Yes. Embroidered terry towels and canvas totes are popular yacht club retail items. We embroider the club burgee or crest on towel hems and tote front panels for member purchase or guest gift bags.

Can you produce yacht club burgees as embroidered patches?

Yes. Burgee patches are produced as fully embroidered patches with merrowed edges and can be applied to blazers, polos, or jackets. We can also embroider the burgee directly on garments.

How do you handle salt air and humidity considerations?

Polyester thread is the right choice for marine wear because it resists UV breakdown and does not weaken in humid environments the way rayon can. We use polyester thread across the board for marina orders.
