PVC Patch

Pronounced: P-V-C

A patch made from molded polyvinyl chloride rubber rather than embroidered thread, used for waterproof and detailed graphic applications.

PVC patches are made from molded polyvinyl chloride rubber rather than stitched thread. The design is sculpted in a master mold, then PVC material is poured layer by layer into the mold with different colors for each layer, building up the patch in three-dimensional rubber. The finished patch is flexible, waterproof, and shows fine detail that embroidery cannot reproduce.

PVC is the go-to material for tactical morale patches, scuba and diving badges, outdoor and military gear, and any application where the patch will get wet or where the design needs sharper detail than embroidery allows. The 3D molded relief gives PVC patches a distinctive dimensional look, often with raised lettering and recessed background details.

PVC patches are manufactured by injection molding or casting, which means they require a custom mold for each design. Mold costs are higher than digitizing for embroidery (often $50 to $200 for the mold), but per-piece costs at higher quantities can be lower than embroidered patches because the production process is highly automated.

Backing options for PVC patches are the same as embroidered patches: sew-on (with a sewn border around the perimeter), velcro hook-and-loop, iron-on adhesive, and adhesive peel-and-stick. PVC patches with velcro are especially common on tactical gear, where the rubber durability and weatherproofing matter more than a traditional embroidered look.

Examples

  • Tactical military morale patches
  • Dive flag and scuba certification badges
