What is jacket embroidery?

Jacket embroidery covers everything from a left-chest logo on a Port Authority soft-shell to a 12-inch full-back design on a Carhartt work jacket. The challenge — and the reason jackets command a slightly higher price than polos — is fabric variety. A Champion fleece needs a cut-away stabilizer and a slightly slower stitch speed to prevent the pile from being pulled into the design. A waxed canvas Filson jacket needs a leather-point needle to punch through the coating cleanly. A nylon-shell quilted jacket needs careful hooping to avoid puckering the down chambers behind the panel. Our shop has run thousands of jacket embroidery jobs and we have the needles, stabilizers, and machine settings dialed in for every common fabric family. Front-chest, sleeve, and full-back are the three standard placements; we will do unusual placements (hood, lower back hem, cuff) by custom quote.

Best garments for jacket embroidery

For corporate teamwear, our most-embroidered jackets are Port Authority J317 soft-shell (mid-weight, year-round, premium feel), Eddie Bauer EB540 weather-resistant softshell, Port Authority F217 fleece (lightweight, layer-friendly), and Cutter & Buck quarter-zips. For trades and contractors, we run Carhartt CTSJ140 work jackets, Carhartt CTJ130 quilted-lined jackets, and Dickies Eisenhower-style work jackets. For retail and event use, Champion Reverse Weave hoodies, Independent Trading SS4500 hoodies, and Augusta athletic warm-ups. Leather and denim biker vests are a specialty product — we do them, but they ship on a longer turnaround.

How to prepare artwork for jacket embroidery

Jacket placement determines artwork prep. Front-chest jackets follow the same vector/300 DPI rules as polos. Full-back jackets need vector or 600 DPI raster because the design will scale up to 12 inches and every detail matters. Note that some jacket fabrics (heavy fleece, quilted nylon) can't render fine detail — fills look great, but 1/8-inch lettering will get lost. We will email a digitized mock before stitching so you can flag any concerns. For sleeve jacket embroidery, the design has to land cleanly between the shoulder seam and the elbow without crossing the bicep curve — we'll suggest size adjustments if needed.

Jacket Embroidery pricing details

Front chest jacket embroidery runs $15 per piece. Full back is $55. Sleeve is $12. A bundled left-chest + full-back combo on the same jacket is $65 (versus $70 if ordered separately). Heavy or specialty fabrics (leather, waxed canvas) add a $3-5 per-piece handling fee due to needle wear and slower stitching speeds. Digitizing is the standard $125 one-time fee. Volume breaks at 12, 24, and 72 jackets.

Jacket Embroidery FAQ

Can you embroider through a quilted jacket without poking the down?
Yes. We hoop the outer shell only, never penetrating the inner liner. This is a standard technique on Patagonia and North Face puffer jackets — done right, there is no visible impact to the insulation.
Do you embroider Carhartt jackets?
Yes, Carhartt work jackets are one of our most-requested specialties. We use a heavy-duty needle and a permanent cut-away stabilizer rated for Carhartt's heavy duck canvas.
Can you do leather biker vests?
Yes — leather and denim biker vests, MC colors, and rocker sets are a specialty product. We use a chisel-point leather needle and a longer turnaround (10-14 business days) because the stitching speed has to be reduced for needle longevity.
Will the embroidery wash out on a softshell?
No. We use Madeira Polyneon thread on a cut-away stabilizer, both rated for repeated machine washing and dry cleaning. Softshell jackets typically only get washed every few weeks anyway, so the embroidery will easily outlast the jacket's useful life.
How much does it cost to embroider a single jacket?
A single jacket with a left-chest logo runs $15 plus the $125 one-time digitizing fee if you do not have a stitch file already. If you have run logos with us before, the digitizing fee is waived.
