What is full back embroidery?

Full back embroidery is the largest standard placement we offer — a 12-inch by 14-inch design canvas that covers the upper and mid back of a jacket, hoodie, or work shirt. This is the placement biker clubs use for their colors, contractors use for their company name and phone number, fire departments use for unit insignia, and event organizers use for sponsor logos on staff jackets. The design typically starts about 3 inches below the collar seam and tapers down toward the small of the back. Because the back panel is flat and roomy, full-back designs can carry serious stitch count — 40,000 to 50,000 stitches is normal for a fully filled logo with text. Run time per garment is 35-50 minutes, which is why we quote a longer turnaround and why minimum orders sometimes get bumped to 7-10 business days. The trade-off is worth it: a full-back embroidered jacket reads as professional and premium from across a parking lot.

Best garments for full back embroidery

Full back works best on garments with stable, structured back panels: Carhartt and Dickies work jackets, Port Authority and CornerStone soft-shell and quilted jackets, Champion and Independent Trading hoodies, denim and leather riding vests, and heavyweight crewneck sweatshirts. Lightweight tees, thin performance fabrics, and stretch knits are NOT good candidates — the heavy stitch load deforms thin fabric. Garments with center back seams (some softshells, some quilted designs) need the design centered carefully to avoid the seam line. For leather and waxed canvas, we use a heavy-duty needle and a permanent cut-away stabilizer.

How to prepare artwork for full back embroidery

At 12 inches wide, your artwork can carry significant detail — but every detail translates into stitches. Vector AI/EPS files are strongly preferred; we will digitize from a high-res PNG (600+ DPI) if that is what you have. Plan for stitch count: a simple text-and-logo lockup might run 25,000 stitches, a fully filled emblem with multiple colors and texture can hit 50,000. We will quote any overage above 50,000 stitches before we run the job. For text inside a full-back design, anything less than 1/2" tall starts to lose definition — keep your readable text at 1/2" minimum, your decorative text at 3/4" or larger.

Full Back Embroidery pricing details

Base price is $45 per garment for full-back embroidery up to 50,000 stitches. Stitches above the 50,000 threshold run $0.35 per additional 1,000. Digitizing is the standard $125 one-time fee. Volume pricing tiers begin at 24 pieces, with significant drops at 72 and 144. A combined full-back + left-chest order on the same garment runs $50 per piece (a $5 discount versus running each placement separately).

Full Back Embroidery FAQ

Can I do full back on a jacket that has a back yoke seam?
Usually yes — we center the design below the yoke or scale it slightly so the top edge sits flush with the yoke seam. Send us a photo of the specific jacket and we will confirm.
How long does a full back order take?
Standard turnaround is 7-10 business days from artwork approval. Stitch time per garment is 35-50 minutes, so a 50-piece order is essentially a two-day machine run on top of digitizing and finishing.
Will a full-back design make my jacket stiff?
A heavy-stitch full back does add structure and weight to the back panel — many customers actually like the substantial feel. If you want the design to feel softer, we can use a lighter underlay and skip the dense fills.
Can I do a full back on a leather riding vest?
Yes, full-back embroidery on leather and denim biker vests is one of our specialties. We use a chisel-point leather needle and a cut-away stabilizer rated for the punch density required.
Is full-back patch (sewn-on) better than direct embroidery?
Depends on the use case. Sewn-on patches are easier to swap if your design changes, and they can be moved between jackets. Direct embroidery looks more integrated and premium. For permanent corporate or unit branding, we usually recommend direct. For personal patches that may move between vests, we recommend our embroidered patches product.
