What is cap & hat embroidery?

Hat embroidery is its own discipline — different machine, different hooping system, different stabilizer than flat garment work. Our cap-frame attachment holds the bill out of the way and curves the crown into a near-flat surface so the needle can stitch cleanly across panel seams. Front-panel embroidery is the standard placement: a 2.5-inch tall design centered above the bill, spanning two adjacent crown panels. Side and back placements are smaller (typically a 2-inch wordmark or symbol) and lean more decorative. We run flat embroidery as default and offer 3D puff embroidery as an upgrade for that raised, dimensional look you see on snapbacks and trucker hats. Common customers include sports teams, real estate brokerages, marinas, country clubs, breweries, restaurants, and event organizers — hats are the highest-perceived-value embroidered item per dollar spent.

Best garments for cap & hat embroidery

Structured caps with buckram fronts (Yupoong Flexfit, Richardson 112 trucker, New Era 9Fifty) are the easiest to embroider and give the cleanest results. Unstructured "dad hats" (Yupoong 6245CM, Adams ACEM101) work fine but require a slightly softer underlay to avoid puckering the crown. Snapbacks and 5-panel camp caps both run well on our cap frame. Knit beanies need a different stabilizer setup — we treat them as a separate setup and they take slightly longer per piece. Foam-front trucker hats are the natural home for 3D puff embroidery. If you are providing your own hats, send us the brand and style number and we will confirm compatibility before quoting.

How to prepare artwork for cap & hat embroidery

Hat embroidery is constrained by the small canvas — 2.5 inches tall is your absolute ceiling for the front panel. Designs that look great on a left chest often need to be simplified for a hat. Drop the tagline, drop the est. date line, focus on the primary mark and the brand name. Text smaller than 1/4 inch tall will struggle to stitch legibly because of the curved crown surface. For 3D puff, the artwork has to be designed for it — solid bold shapes, thick outlines, no fine detail. Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF) are strongly preferred; 600 DPI PNGs are workable. We will email a digitized mock with the exact final size before stitching, and we'll flag anything that won't translate.

Cap / Hat Embroidery pricing details

Front-panel hat embroidery starts at $15 per cap up to 10,000 stitches. Side panel runs $12, back panel runs $10. 3D puff embroidery adds $3 per hat to the placement price. Digitizing is the standard $125 one-time fee. We sell wholesale-priced hat blanks at our shop (Richardson 112, Yupoong Flexfit, New Era 9Twenty) — bundling hats and embroidery into one order is usually cheaper than buying retail hats elsewhere and bringing them to us. Volume breaks at 24, 72, and 144 caps.

Cap / Hat Embroidery FAQ

What is the difference between flat and 3D puff embroidery?
Flat embroidery sews directly onto the fabric. 3D puff places a piece of foam under the stitching to raise the design off the hat, giving a bold dimensional look popular on trucker hats and snapbacks. Puff works best with thick outlined letters and solid shapes — fine detail doesn't translate.
Can you embroider on a hat I bought from somewhere else?
Yes, customer-supplied hats are welcome. Note that we cannot guarantee results on unfamiliar brands until we test-stitch — and we charge a small handling fee for hats provided by the customer.
Which hat brands work best for embroidery?
Richardson 112 trucker and Yupoong Flexfit are our two daily workhorses — structured front, clean stitching, available at wholesale. For dad hats we recommend Yupoong 6245CM. For high-end fashion we run New Era 9Fifty snapbacks. For winter beanies we recommend Sportsman SP12 with a soft-touch underlay.
How many hats do I need to order?
No minimum. We do single-hat custom orders every week (memorial hats, anniversary gifts, business owner branding). Volume pricing starts at 24.
Can you do a front + side hat layout?
Yes. Front + side is common for sports team hats (logo on front, year or name on side). The combined price is $22 per hat versus $27 if you ran them as separate orders.
