What is bag & tote embroidery?

Bag and tote embroidery is one of the highest-impact branding placements per dollar — a customer walks around carrying your logo all day. Common formats include cotton canvas totes (the classic conference giveaway and retail shopping bag), heavyweight duffel bags (gym swag, sports team gear, corporate retreats), drawstring cinch packs (event swag, school athletics), backpacks (team gear, corporate gifts), and cooler bags (summer events, golf outings). The challenge with bag embroidery is hooping geometry — bags don't lay flat like a polo, so we use a specialized free-arm machine attachment to embroider through a single fabric panel while the rest of the bag falls clear. Common placements are the front-center panel (6 inches wide, the corporate standard), the side pocket (smaller, secondary mark), and occasionally the top flap of messenger-style bags.

Best garments for bag & tote embroidery

For corporate giveaways and event swag, our most-embroidered bags are Liberty Bags 8502 heavyweight canvas tote (the conference workhorse), Port Authority BG408 zippered tote, and Liberty Bags 8867 cotton canvas tote. For team and gym use, Augusta 1825 duffel and Holloway 229419 gear bag. For backpacks, Port Authority BG204 daypack and Russell Athletic backpack. For coolers, Liberty Bags FT004 6-can cooler is a summer event favorite. Drawstring bags (Liberty Bags 8881) are the cheapest single-color giveaway and embroider beautifully. We don't recommend embroidery on technical materials (Cordura, ripstop nylon) — those are better suited to screen print or DTF.

How to prepare artwork for bag & tote embroidery

Bag embroidery uses the same vector/300 DPI raster rules as garment work. Two bag-specific notes: (1) Canvas tote fabric is loose-weave compared to a polo knit, so designs with very fine detail (sub-1/8 inch) can struggle. Keep typography bold and lines thick. (2) Many bags have a contrasting bottom panel or pocket layer that interrupts the embroidery area — measure the usable flat panel and confirm the design will fit before we run. We will email a mock with placement preview.

Bag / Tote Embroidery pricing details

Bag embroidery starts at $20 per piece for a standard 6-inch design on canvas. Heavier bag fabrics (poly duffel, padded backpacks) run $22. Digitizing is the standard $125 one-time fee. Bag bundles (buy blanks + embroidery from us) are typically 15-20% cheaper than retail blanks plus separate embroidery. Volume breaks at 24, 72, and 144 bags. Single-bag custom orders are welcome.

Can you embroider on a backpack with structured panels?

Yes, as long as the front panel has a single flat layer accessible for hooping. We cannot stitch through padded foam panels or multiple zippered layers. Send us the bag model and we will confirm before quoting.

What is the cheapest bag for a giveaway run?

Drawstring cinch packs (Liberty Bags 8881) at high volume are typically the cheapest fully-branded giveaway — under $5 per piece all-in at 100+ quantity with a single-color logo.

Will embroidery damage a tote bag with a printed design?

No. Embroidery sits on top of the printed graphics — we'll just need to confirm the placement zone is clear of printed elements that would conflict visually.

Can you do bags in a rush?

Yes, rush bag embroidery is available for an additional 25% surcharge with 2-3 business day turnaround on stocked blanks. Custom-color blanks require regular turnaround.
